In 1991, the University of Toronto Women’s Cross Country team I was coaching, pulled off a major upset, winning the Canadian University Championship.
Most upset was the heavily favoured University of Victoria team especially given that Victoria was hosting the championships.
Making the outcome seem more unlikely was the fact that the ladies had “only” finished 2nd at the Ontario Championships a couple of weeks earlier.
It was a very good day since on the same day, my men’s team, decisively won their national championship. But that was expected.
In recognition of the Women’s accomplishment, the team was inducted in to the University of Toronto Sports Hall of Fame on Thursday June 8, 2017. Also inducted as an individual was the team’s outstanding runner, Alison Evanoff. The announcement is here .
And here’s the team... liking my Tom Selleck moustache.
