Well, Mr. Bolt, the "Legend", certainly strutted his stuff in the 100m in London this past week, but I happen to know there was one woman, named Sarah, located at the Cincinatti Zoo who was overheard to say, "that don't impress me much". Not at all, for 11 year old Sarah is one fast Cheetah.
And National Geographic recently reported (read here) a speed test, conducted on June 20, 2012, with 5 cheetahs and Sarah came out on top.
For the cats it seemed to be a game, bolting out of the back of one of the zoo's vans and chasing fluffy toy dogs as they were pulled across a meadow on a high-speed cord. You can see Sarah in action in this fun video. Quite something
For comparison, we have data for Bolt's 100m World Record of 9.58, achieved in the 2009 World Track and Field Championships held in Berlin. It comes from an interesting, but rather technical examination of that race. The study compares the performances of the top 3 finishers: Bolt (9.58), Tyson Gay (9.71) and Asafa Powell (9.84). You can read the study's paper here.
By the way, it was found that the sprinters' top speeds happened at about 60 metres and were just about constant though 80 metres, after which there is a deceleration.
So here's how they respective world record holders match over 100 metres - there is no contest at top speed:
